Nathan Templeton (Associate Professor and Director of the Meadows Principal Leadership Institute in the Department of Educational Leadership at Texas A&M University Commerce)

Dr. Nathan R. (Nate) Templeton is an Associate Professor and Director of the Meadows Principal Leadership Institute in the Department of Educational Leadership at Texas A&M University Commerce. Prior to joining the graduate faculty at A&M Commerce, where he teaches in the masters and doctoral educational leadership programs, Dr. Templeton served in Texas public schools as campus principal, teacher, and program administrator.

As a scholar-practitioner, Dr. Templeton serves on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Collaborative Leadership and the Journal of Bullying and Aggression. Areas of research passion include eliminating educational inequality, systemic sustainability, and using research based best practice to improve student achievement and ensure effective practices. Thus, the quantitative research agenda includes: Improving practitioner competency for campus principals, leadership in rural schools, and program preparation and evaluation in higher education, and closing the achievement gaps between traditionally underrepresented student populations. Dr. Templeton has published over 35 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters; as well as presenting research on Closing the Achievement Gaps, Principal Preparation Program Evaluation, and Equity and School Reform at state, national and international conferences and professional development workshops. Additionally, Dr. Templeton serves as peer reviewer for numerous professional journals and currently serves as Editor of the International Journal of Education Leadership Preparation and serves as Co-Editor of the edited book, Texas Public School Organization and Administration, Co-Editor of the International Journal of Educational Leadership Preparation (IJELP), and Editor of Mentoring and Tutoring: Partnership in Learning Journal. In addition to serving as Guest Editor of School Leadership Review’s Special Edition on Leadership in Rural Schools (2019), Dr. Templeton’s book, Voices from the Field: Building Capacity for Leadership and Social Change in Rural Schools will be published in Fall 2020. Dr. Templeton’s is an active member of numerous professional associations, including the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals (TASSP), Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA), Texas Council of Professors of Educational Administration (TCPEA) Executive Board, and President of the International Council of Professors of Educational Leadership (ICPEL).

Dr. Templeton has received numerous awards and honors, including A&M Commerce Professor of the Year (2015), A&M Commerce Campus Life & Student Development Partnership Award (2016), Texas Council of Professors of Educational Administration Educator of the Year (2017), Texas Association of Black Professionals in Higher Education Joyce Miller Excellence in Teaching Award (2017), Texas Association of Black Professionals in Higher Education C.W. Leftwich Imagination in Teaching Award (2019), Texas Council of Professors of Education Administration Outstanding Dissertation of the Year Chair’s Award (2019), and International Council of Professors of Educational Leadership Morphet Outstanding Dissertation of the Year Chair’s Award (2020).
